CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE SAGE FIELD PROGRAM AWARD
------------------------
The Geophysical Society of New Zealand offers an award to help a New Zealand student attend the Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience (SAGE) in the United States. The SAGE programme is a unique opportunity designed to introduce geophysics students to geophysical exploration and research. The program emphasises both field methods and research related to a variety of basic and applied problems. SAGE has operated in the Rio Grande rift in New Mexico (USA) since 1983.
GNS Science, the New Zealand Earthquake Commission, NIWA and OMV New Zealand are generously sponsoring the 2008 award.
The SAGE programme normally extends from approximately June 21st to July 13th
Further information about SAGE can be found at the web site: http://www.sage.lanl.gov/ )
Applications are invited for the award of the 2008 SAGE AWARD. Applications are due with the Awards Committee by December 31, 2007. The value of the award for 2008 will be about $3600NZ. The award will be announced by the end of February 2008.
Attendance at SAGE is likely to cost about $3600, depending on airfares and including a course fee of US$450. Although the society expects to have sufficent sponsorship to cover the full costs students applying for this award are encouraged to seek support from other sources as well as the society. In the past, for example, such support has come from the student's university department. Applicants are required to provide:
(a) a copy of the applicant's academic record
(b) a budget with their application indicating the approximate costs of attendance (including course fees, airfares, subsistence and accomodation) and what sources (if any) they would use to supplement the Society's award.
(c) a statement from the student indicating how participation in the programme will benefit their university study and career in geophysics.
The application must be accompanied by a supporting statement from the student's supervisor/advisor
In fairness to the sponsors and other applicants the council will generally not consider applications which seek to postpone award use until later years.
