MEETING TO CELEBRATE JAMES HECTOR, 8 NOVEMBER 2007, WELLINGTON
James Hector died 100 years ago, in November 1907. For the preceding 40 years he had been the dominant person in NZ science - in charge of the Colonial Museum (now Te Papa), NZ Institute (now Royal Society of New Zealand) and NZ Geological Survey (now GNS Science). The Hector family plans a reunion, and in combination with that plans are underway for a one-day scientific and historical meeting on Thursday 8 November at Te Papa to commemorate Hector's activities and legacy. It will include talks covering aspects of Hectors career. Ian Speden, Hamish Campbell and Simon Nathan have formed themselves into a small organising committee. A programme and registration form will be available in August.
Although there are already a number of invited speakers, the organisers would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in contributing to the meeting. If you would like more information or want to be sent the registration form, please email s.nathan@xtra.co.nz

The 27th IUGG Conference on Mathematical Geophysics
June 15 - 20, 2008, Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen, Norway
The theme of the meeting is Dynamics in Earth Systems. All researchers using quantitative methods to study evolving Earth systems are invited. Studies that integrate field observations, laboratory experiments and theoretical models are especially welcome. Particular focus will be given to physical problems where new quantitative theories offer the possibility of significant progress in our understanding of environmental processes. These problems include fracture, ranging from ice sheets to earthquakes, geophysical fluid dynamics, ranging from internal and surface flows to oceanic and atmospheric dynamics; and physical aspects of the Earth's biological, chemical, and climatic evolution.

OCEANIA SYMPOSIUM AT IGC 2008 OSLO
Call for titles/themes of presentations
Desmond Darby
GNS Science
There will be a one- or two-day Oceania Symposium during the 33rd IGC in Oslo, 6-14 August, 2008 (www.33igc.org). It is therefore time to plan what the New Zealand earth science community wants to present at this Symposium.
The Symposium will also serve as a precursor to the 34th IGC in Brisbane in 2012 which Australia and New Zealand are co-hosting, and will help to determine the themes we focus upon in Brisbane. This all seemed a long way off when we won the bid in 2004 to co-host the 2012 meeting, but the Oslo precursor is now only 11 months away.
The convenors (Neil Williams and Ian.Lambert from Geoscience Australia, and myself) are suggesting the following themes for the Oceania Symposium at Oslo:
finding the next generation of mineral and energy resources
geoscience for natural resource management
geothermal energy
regional geology and geophysics
regional geohazards
continental shelves
Antarctica and climate change.
While full abstract submission does not close off till 1 February 2008, please send to me (desmond.darby@gns.cri.nz), as soon as you can, New Zealand/SW Pacific highlight titles you may wish to present at this Symposium at IGC 2008 Oslo. These will give us a guide as to how we organise the Symposium. Please distribute this request to others who may not see it directly.
