New Zealand Geophysical Society
JIM ANSELL GEOPHYSICS SCHOLARSHIP

Preamble
The Annual General Meeting of the New Zealand Geophysical Society (Inc.) held at Wellington on 22 August 1994 resolved to establish the Jim Ansell Geophysics Scholarship. The Scholarship was founded by major inaugural grants from the Ansell family, IASPEI94 conference, Research School of Earth Sciences at Victoria University of Wellington and Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences; and from significant individual contributions by members of the Society, and from academic colleagues and friends of Jim Ansell. The Scholarship is intended to encourage and assist students to further their study and research in the field of geophysics. The rules governing the scholarship, including amendments approved by the Annual General Meeting held at Wellington on 31 August 1995, are set out below.

The Society now calls for applications for the year 2008 award of the Scholarship, which will be a grant of $1500. The applicant must have completed tertiary prerequisites to register for degree study in geophysics and must have arranged to undertake a degree embodying geophysical study of relevance to New Zealand.

Although there is no prescribed application form, each application should be accompanied by the candidate's academic record and curriculum vitae, a statement of study plans, and the names and addresses of at least two referees.

An application may be made either directly by the candidate, or by another person on the candidate's behalf, and should reach the Secretary by 30 September 2008.

Rules

1.
The Scholarship shall be known as the
JIM ANSELL GEOPHYSICS SCHOLARSHIP, and shall be awarded as a memorial to Professor J H Ansell (1942-1993), honouring his enthusiastic commitment to the educational development of students of geophysics.

2.The Scholarship shall be awarded by the Council of the New Zealand Geophysical Society (Inc.) to the applicant whose subsequent career, in the opinion of the Council, is the most likely to advance geophysics in New Zealand.

To be eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant -
        (a) must have completed tertiary prerequisites to register for degree study in geophysics; and
        (b) must have arranged to undertake a degree embodying geophysical study of relevance to New Zealand; and
        (c) must have either completed or arranged to complete a significant amount of degree study in New Zealand.

Except in special circumstances, an award shall not be made more than once to the same person.

3.Nomination of an applicant must be made, either by the applicant or on the applicant's behalf, to the Secretary of the Society by the closing date for that year. The nomination must be accompanied by evidence of merit and a statement of the arrangements that have been made for further study. Note the application deadline in 2008 will be September 30.

4.Towards the end of each year, the Council of the Society shall appoint a Scholarship Committee of three to five members (not necessarily members of the Society) and forward to them the names of the applicants and documents supporting their applications. The Scholarship Committee may seek nominations, and shall, after considering the merits of the applicants, recommend to the Council which eligible applicant is the most likely to advance geophysics in his or her subsequent career. The Council shall then decide the winning applicant. Members of the Scholarship Committee shall not be eligible for the Scholarship. The Council may at any time replace a resigning member of the Scholarship Committee.

5.The Scholarship will normally be awarded annually and the winner announced in April of each year; but if, in the opinion of the Council, no applicant has sufficient merit, the Scholarship shall not be awarded.

6.The Society shall invest the capital sum of money accrued for the Scholarship in a special account to be known as the Jim Ansell Geophysics Scholarship Fund. The Council shall endeavour to maintain the purchasing power of the Fund. The award shall consist of a sum of money drawn from the interest on the Fund and will be paid after the winner has registered for the arranged studies.

Explanatory Note:Rules 7, 8, 9 and 10 are required in order to gain approval from the New Zealand Inland Revenue Department of Charitable Donee Status for the Jim Ansell Geophysics Scholarship Fund, thus qualifying donations to the Fund to be deductible against New Zealand income taxation.

7.(a) Any income, benefit or advantage from the Scholarship Fund shall be applied to the charitable purposes of the Jim Ansell Geophysics Scholarship.

(b) No member of the N Z Geophysical Society or any person associated with a member shall participate in or materially influence any decision made by the Society in respect of the payment to or on behalf of that member or associated person of any income, benefit or advantage whatsoever from the Jim Ansell Geophysics Scholarship Fund.

(c) Any income paid from the Jim Ansell Geophysics Scholarship Fund for services rendered, or for reimbursement of expenses incurred, shall be reasonable and relative to that which would be paid in an arm's length transaction.
(d) Unless approval is given by the Inland Revenue Department, the provisions and effects of rule 7 shall not be removed from this document and shall be included and implied into any document replacing this document.

8.If upon the winding up or dissolution of the Jim Ansell Geophysics Scholarship Fund there remains after satisfaction of all its debts and liabilities any property whatsoever, the same shall not be distributed among the members of the Society, but shall be given or transferred to some other charitable purpose within New Zealand.

9.No addition to or alteration of the charitable objects, the personal benefit clause or the winding up clause shall be made without Inland Revenue Department's approval.

10.Every winner of the Jim Ansell Geophysics Scholarship shall use the moneys or benefits awarded from the Scholarship to pursue geophysical research of relevance to New Zealand.
